Climbing in North America
Non-climbers (me) sometimes have difficulty understanding why climbers climb when it isn‘t any fun and the risks get ridiculous. Most climbing books don’t say much about that, or if they do, it’s concealed in a mass of equipment descriptions and jargon as mysterious as the motivations in question. Chris Jones has deftly managed to combine exciting accounts, diaries, and history with a handsome writing style. The result is that you can begin to feel what is behind the willingness to face hardship and death. I was fascinated by the controversies regarding the use or non-use of certain pieces of hardware, and the tough competitiveness underlying most of the expeditions. It’s easy to starve while trying to read all about it in one sitting. By the fire.
