A Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals (3rd Edition)
In the last twenty years the demand for decorative minerals has grown into a major industry. Interior decorators search for the perfect agate geode to match the furniture; mantels have floral arrangements of gypsum roses. Yet beautiful specimens of gems and crystals ー investments as solid as postage stamps ー are regularly sent to the crusher by mining operators who fret about insurance hassles or simply can’t be bothered to allow people to collect them. Other minerals, like turquoise, are simply mined out. More delicate engineering and active public concern are badly needed.
Most minerals are rocks are hard to identify. The more you know the more likely you are to buy a rarity cheap or recognize a beautiful specimen. The Peterson field guide is the oldest and best. The writing, keys, locations, and “interesting facts” section far surpass other guides. Its drawback: some of the photos are old black and whites.
