Small Houses
The best way to be energy and resources-efficient is to not use so much energy and resources in the first place. The only good reason to have a big house is if you have a lot of kids, relatives, or friends that need to be there often. Otherwise, you’re probably building for old-mode prestige, or warehousing a collection of possibly nifty, but probably tiresome-by-now stuff. You must enjoy — or ignore — housework.
Small houses take less work to make and less time to maintain and are potentially cheaper. They need not be cramped, tacky, or otherwise annoying — but clever design is a must. Think built-ins. Think yacht. Just think. I’ve seen abundant proof that a really nice, efficient house for two people can be had for well under $100,000 even in California. This book is part of the proof.
