Aboriginal American Indian Basketry
For those interested in American Indian basketry there is one thorough classic originally published as Aboriginal American Basketry (1902), with 248 plates, 48 in color. It’s hard to say a few words about this book ー it’s very thorough. A sampling of what is covered: materials by Latin and common names, basket making symbolism, uses and ethnic varieties from all over the Americas. There are photographs of many basket types and of Indian women with their work. Although there are no “instructions,” experienced basket makers will find inspiration and ideas from illustrations and line drawings. (l might mention that this and all the Rio Grande books are large with sturdy bindings and washable covers. They will hold up well as reference books.)
